NEW DELHI: Truck drivers will start a nation-wide campaign demanding Covid insurance cover for them from Wednesday. They will blow horns simultaneously for one minute at 1 pm for one week.

Though a group of secretaries had considered and recommended ex-gratia for truck drivers engaged in transporting essential commodities during the lockdown, it did not see the light of the day.

“It’s an effort to catch the attention of the government which is well aware of the services of truck drivers in times of need. All major truckers and transporters organizations have extended their support to this campaign,” said Girish Mirchandani, convener of Driver’s Life Matters.

He said while the government provided insurance cover to health and sanitation workers, it was a lapse to leave truck drivers out of the risk cover ambit.

“Covid is not going to end today or tomorrow. Though a remedy may be found soon, administering it to the needy is going to be a long-drawn process. So, our truck driver brethren are going to be exposed to this pandemic for a very long period,” the organisation has written to transport minister, Nitin Gadkari while seeking the insurance cover for drivers.
